5 Skills Taught in the Armed Forces to Help You Secure a Job

5 Skills Taught in the Armed Forces to Help You Secure a Job Since I was really young, I have always shown passion for the military. Whether it was watching action packed war movies or running around with toy guns pretending to be a soldier, this was my lifestyle after school. My dad, along with much of my family heritage, also served in the armed forces. He was my number one hero, even though he didnt talk much about the time while he was in service. My grandfather as well as my great grandfather also served in the military. So this was a tradition in my family tree and how the military became part of our lives. Therefore, one can assume that right out of high school, I would head down to the recruitment office and enlist in the military. Six months after I enlisted, I was a certified United States Marine. My dad came up to me, shook my hand, and expressed how proud he was of me. That moment, along with my wedding and the birth of my son, would become one of the defining moments of my life. I advanced through the early stages of being a marine fairly quickly. After 8 years, I had reached the rank of gunnery sergeant and just returned from my third tour of duty; my second term of service was coming to an end. With my wife and 4 year old boy, we made the decision for me not to reenlist. It was extremely difficult to adjust back to the cultures of civilian life after my military history. It had been 8 years since I did the simplest civilian activity such as getting a haircut. Also, I was 26 years old and didnt have experience other than my job in military communications and a paper route when I was in my early teens. After a few weeks, I became quickly overwhelmed and discouraged with finding a new direction for my career. My family supported me in every way and soon enough I came to my senses. Aside from my physical experiences, what kind of mental experiences gathered from my services could be useful in this situation? I came up with 5 rules that kept me going through my rough times: 1. Going on Patrol. Apply for a job is like going on patrol. Its usually repetitive, boring and uneventful but is always important. When you least expect it, something could happen which turns out great or for the worse. 2. Positive Morale. When you get discouraged or frustrate, dont be afraid to take a step back to gather yourself. Stop thinking about how much job hunting sucks and participate in your hobbies to build your morale up. Nobody wants to hire a discouraged worker. Dont go A.W.O.L.! 3. Reconnaissance. Learn about the position and company you are applying for. Youll never know what questions will be asked in your interviews. Having a good amount of knowledge can strengthen your resume and your interview. You may find job opportunities at unexpected places, dont miss them. Practice your interviews frequently and be prepared for whatever is out there. 4. Never run out of ammo. Always bring multiple resumes as well as supporting documents at all times. Having to fall back to re-supply may cost valuable time as well as missing opportunities that can make a difference. Have resumes as well as personal business cards on your person at all times. The next interview could happen while waiting in line for coffee, or on the train. 5. You lead your platoon, your platoon takes care of you. Remember, youre not going through it alone. You have family and friends that love you and support you in your search, and are always there. This is one of the hardest things Ive found many military vets to realize, they feel like they have to internalize and take on the burden and stress all by themselves. It was my wife that would cheer me up and stay positive, and bring me up out of the dark when I felt I had a particularly bad string of interviews. Related: 10 Secrets to Getting Yourself Headhunted. Guest rant My investment-banking brother says...

Guest rant My investment-banking brother says... Here is one of hundreds of reasons senior investment bankers make life for analysts worse than it already is: Voicemail. First of all, no one under thirty uses voicemail unless they are making a joke. If you make a call and the person does not pick up their phone, send an email. Thats why they gave you the BlackBerry, right? Picking up a voicemail is slow and there is no way to file it. Also, people must stop using inept management tactics like the red bomb. This is when a senior guy wants to tell you something, but instead of calling you and risking that youll answer the phone and therefore be able to ask a question, (like Whats the deadline?), he goes directly into the voice mail system to leave you a message. Its a red bomb because you get the red light on your phone that means you have a voice mail, and a bomb because you know only someone internally can do it, and it must be a senior guy because no one else would do it. If youre sitting at your desk and all of a sudden you have a voice mail, and you know your phone hasnt rung, youve just been nailed by a red bomb.

Ask the CHO What if you suddenly stopped being happy - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Ask the CHO What if you suddenly stopped being happy - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Russell Quinn asks a very interesting question in a comment: I?ve been reading your blog for a while and your career in ?being happy? got me thinking. Can an occupation in promoting an emotion like your own happiness be compared to something like an athlete? and what happens when it?s over? For example, you can train yourself to be happier and work at improving your own happiness, in the same way as you can train your muscles to be a better runner. You can eventually become known as a ?happiness officer? or an ?athlete?. But, in the same way that something unforeseen and out of your control, like a broken leg, can happen end your athletic career, a major trauma could send you into a spiral of depression and end your career in happiness. I guess my point of this.. is that i was considering these two statements and how the public would react to them: ?I used to be an athlete, but a broken leg meant I had to give it up 5 years ago?, and ?I used to promote happiness, but a period of depression meant i gave it up? They are both really the same thing after all. Sorry for going off at a tangent ;) Thats a great tangent! And I really like the mental image of the Chief Happiness Officer whos sprained his happy muscle and is now depressed :o) To me, happiness is not a fixed state its a constantly fluctuating emotion. Its not like I can make myself happy, and then be happy every moment of every day for the rest of my life. No matter how happy a person is right this second, something could happen to make that person desperately unhappy. Depression is a great example as it is a chemical imbalance in the brain resulting in a severely bad mood that may not have been triggered by any external events in your life. But heres the crucial point: As Russell writes, you can train happiness. This wont mean that youll always be happy but that youll be as happy as you can be, given your circumstances. And when something bad happens you will be unhappy, but you will be less unhappy and be so for a shorter time. Martin Seligman, the founder of positive psychology admits that he is not a particularly happy person and that his efforts have taken him from depressive to moderately happy. Which kinda explains why the planets foremost proponent of happiness always looks so grumpy :o) So it could absolutely happen: I could lose my happiness because something bad happened to me or for no reason at all. And I probably would be forced to quit as the Chief Happiness Officer if that happened because theres no way you can make other people happy if youre unhappy yourself. A large part of what I present in my presentations and workshops is me being happy and full of energy and customers constantly remark on this. They like what I say and they like the way I say it just as much. Another important point is that happiness is no less nice, desirable or beautiful for being fragile. Yes, you can build up amazing levels of happiness and lose it all in a moment when some terrifying, unstoppable event takes it all away. But thats no reason not to be as happy as you can. Does that make sense at all? Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles.
